About the Position: Applies Journey-man Level knowledge of electrical properties, principles and accepted maintenance concepts to provide extensive maintenance support to the installation serviced by the Directorate of Public Works.

Duties

Installs, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical wiring systems, related switches, controls, distribution panels, and outlet boxes, as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools and appliances. Plan, lay out, install, modify, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of complete systems as well as any parts of these systems. Interpret and apply the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings. Operate various motor vehicles to commute to and from job sites and/or to obtain/ deliver supplies and equipment. Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests, and adjusts a variety of equipment. Tests circuits and equipment by use of voltmeter, ammeter, and wattmeter. Measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles, and installs conduits, inserting, splicing and connecting wires to fixtures, outlets, switches, receptacles, and power source. Repairs lighting systems or other systems atop antenna or water towers. Responsible for minor vehicle maintenance of vehicles used on the job.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid AK drivers license.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items that weigh over 20 lbs. and occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 lbs and occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 lbs. Must have normal color perception to determine colors of various wires. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside buildings and shops and outside. Subject to contact with dirt, dust, and grease; shocks and burns from high voltage; cuts and bruises. May be required to work atop water and antenna towers up to 180 feet in height, with danger to self from working at extreme heights. Incumbent may sometimes be required to make repairs and installations outside in inclement weather and in work areas that are noisy. Occasionally may be exposed to possibility of broken bones, electrical shock and burns and frequently exposed to possibility of cuts and bruises. The incumbent of this position is on occasion exposed to toxic chemicals of various kinds, fibrous glass and extreme heat in confined spaces and working areas. Duty location is in Alaska and will subject employee to extreme weather conditions including wind, rain, snow and temperatures exceeding 50 degrees below zero due to emergency situations.
