About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency, Director of Executive Enhanced Multi Service Market located at Fort Carson, Colorado. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Analyze and interpret documentation and formulate physician queries to improve the quality, completeness and accuracy of the inpatient medical record. Compile, analyze, maintain and report statistical medical data for purposes of quality improvement. Perform a variety of technically complex duties involving auditing, coding, reviewing, training, and analyzing medical data and medical records. Facilitate and obtain appropriate physician documentation by communicating with clinicians and physicians. Apply International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes, interpret Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) and apply Present On Admission (POA) and follow coding rules. Assist with the implementation, training, and sustainment of ICD-10 Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System (CM/PCS), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (PCS) codes for providers and coding staff. Audit medical records and performs quality assurance reviews of the medical data to ensure all diagnoses and procedures are properly documented according to the official ICD10-CM coding guidelines, Ensure proper coding, sequencing of diagnoses and procedures, and sufficient documentation support the level ICD-10 CM/PCS, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes assigned.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is inclement weather essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • You will be required to be screened for immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk. Position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical/admin reasons IAW AR 40-562, Ch 3and 4.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • A probationary period of 1 year may be required.
  • This position is designated Mission Essential, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled, in the event of severe weather or other emergency type situations such as a natural or man-made disaster.
  • Credentialed as Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist, (CCDS) highly desired but not required.
  • Certified Ambulatory Data Coder, credentialed through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) certification is highly desired but not required.
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) is highly desired but not required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: Your resume must reflect at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service which includes: utilizing various coding references, such as International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM), Evaluation and Management (E&M) coding guidelines, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Health Care Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), to perform medical coding functions which includes indexing and categorizing all Inpatient Records (including Ambulatory Procedure Visit Records), and Observation Visit Records; reviewing medical records for proper documentation; ensuring clinical documentation is complete, meets quality standards, and accurately reflects patient severity of illness and risk of mortality; auditing medical records and performing quality assurance reviews of medical data to ensure all diagnoses and procedures are properly documented; ensuring proper coding, sequencing of diagnoses and procedures, and sufficient documentation support the codes assigned. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Management, or a course of study appropriate for the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
