Duties

This position will support the education program at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore by facilitating hands-on, curriculum-based classroom programs and field trips in the park and at partner agencies. Field trips and classroom programs occur throughout all seasons of the school year for grades K-12 that directly support the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and the Every Kid Outdoor Initiative. Must be able to carry up to 25 lbs., shovel snow and work outdoors for long periods of time standing, snowshoeing and/or instructing students in various terrain and conditions including snow- and ice-covered uneven surfaces and steep trails and deep snow. Duties take place primarily in winter (Dec-April) with lots of snow and temperatures below freezing and down to 0 degrees. Driving conditions for on and off-site programing require frequent winter travel to schools, partner sites, and libraries on snow-packed roads and parking areas. Spring programs take place along sandy or rocky shorelines and slushy, muddy and steep trails. Spring thaw and rain means slush, mud, higher humidity and brings out the biting insects. Daily upkeep and maintenance of the Education Shelter is conducted before and after programs which includes but is not limited to, cleaning facility and restrooms, repetitive snow removal, organization of program materials, and conducting safety checks. Other program duties could include assisting with creation of interdisciplinary Great Lakes curriculum correlated to Michigan's Common Core Standards for K-12, planning and designing curriculum-based media materials and publications for schools and partners, presenting pre-school/early childhood programs, assisting with inventorying and organizing education resources, providing support with teacher trainings, grant writing and program evaluation, and assisting in the park's visitor centers as needed. In addition to the duties above, the GS-07 will serve as a work lead to support the education program at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore by facilitating hands-on, curriculum-based classroom programs and field trips in the park and at partner agencies, and virtual/distance learning. Helps train seasonal staff, volunteers, interns, and partners to teach established curricula and other standard programs under the direction of the Education Specialist. Assist supervisory staff in scheduling, coaching, and mentoring of program staff.

Requirements

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/22/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: park guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; camp counselor; scout leader; teaching assistant; coach; museum guide or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) would be considered qualifying. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked. You must include transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: environmental educator or teacher; teaching assistant; interpretive park ranger or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate education which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. You must include transcripts. -OR- EDUCATION - Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of a bachelor's degree with major study in a related field (at least 24 hours) AND one of the following Superior Academic Achievement standards: A standing in the upper third of your graduating class in college, university, or major subdivision, based on completed courses; OR a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B or better) for all courses completed (a) for the full 4-year degree; or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; OR a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B+ or better) for all courses completed in a qualifying major field of study as identified above, either; (a) for the full 4-year degree; or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; OR election to membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies (other than freshman societies) which meet the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts and documentation to show how you qualify for Superior Academic Achievement. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only graduate level education may be combined with specialized experience. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 9 credits of graduate level education from an accredited institution as described above (50% of the qualifying education) would be qualifying. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
