About the Position: Incumbent will receive assignments and general supervision from the Assistant Fire Chief or the Deputy Fire Chief regarding schedules of operations to follow. Directs fire fighting activities of the crew(s) assigned to the station. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Duties

Responds to emergencies working from specific or general orders from higher level supervisors directing assigned personnel in fire fighting activities, search and rescue, HAZMAT incidents, crash/rescue operations and medical emergencies. Assigns crew members to maintenance tasks on fire fighting apparatus and equipment, station and grounds, distributing the workload in a fair and equitable matter. Performs established personnel administration duties. Evaluates performance of subordinates. Plans and organizes work. Plans work schedules and sequence of operations to ensure the meeting of scheduled and priority assignments. Provides employees direct administrative and technical guidance on work requirements and procedures Evaluates work by reviewing it in progress, upon completion, or, as appropriate, on a spot check basis

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program and requires pre-employment and periodic drug testing in accordance with AR 600-85.
  • This position requires successfully completing an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Incumbent will be required to work 3 24-hour shifts per week (60 hours per week, 120 hours per pay period) which may include working weekends and holidays
  • This position requires to participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Must report to duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief. Employee must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or other personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • The work requires the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • This position is designated as Mission Essential and is required to report to work or remain at work to support mission operations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess: Fire Officer II Fire Instructor I Fire Inspector I HAZMAT Incident Commander, Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Airport Firefighter Driver Operator - Pumper, and Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Fire SuppressionManaging Human ResourcesOral CommunicationPreventative Maintenance Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent GS-08.
