This position is located at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ). NIJ provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the state and local levels. The incumbent develops, implements, analyzes, and disseminates a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects.

Duties

Preferred, but not required, background/expertise in victim services, community violence, firearms violence, and/or domestic radicalization and terrorism. Preferred, but not required, background/expertise in tribal research. Performs a variety of analytical research, evaluation, program development, and other tasks in furtherance of the Office of Research, Evaluation, Forensics and Technology (OREFT) program. Develops, implements, analyzes, and disseminates a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects in furtherance of the OREFT program. Serves as a technical expert for a significant segment of a social science focus area or program area.

Qualifications

Basic Entry Requirements: Degree in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- Combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. -OR- Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates the acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. For GS-11: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: Offering advice about victim services, community violence, firearms violence, and/or domestic radicalization and terrorism. Utilizing the knowledge of the social and behavioral sciences to assist in modifying standard techniques, processes, and procedures, as it relates to criminal and juvenile justice, crime victimization and crime services, and crime prevention. Develops recommendations and proposals, as it relates to criminal and juvenile justice, crime victimization and crime services, and crime prevention. For GS-11: Substitution of Education for Experience:A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M. if related. For GS-11: Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements. For GS-12: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: Coordinating and providing technical advice about victim services, community violence, firearms violence, and/or domestic radicalization and terrorism. Utilizing the knowledge of the social and behavioral sciences to modify or adapt standard techniques, processes, and procedures, as it relates to criminal and juvenile justice, crime victimization and crime services, and crime prevention. Utilizing social science knowledge sufficient to extract significant findings from quantitative and qualitative research, and present findings to senior scientists. Performing a variety of analytical and evaluative procedures such as fact-finding and task analysis to identify and obtain a variety of information relevant to ongoing actions, related to criminal or juvenile justice, crime victimization and crime victim services, or related areas of practice. For GS-13: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: Applying advanced social and behavioral science methods, principles, concepts, practices, standards, and analytical techniques, in order to perform a wide range of qualitative and quantitative tasks for the assessment and improvement of program effectiveness in the major focus areas of criminal and juvenile justice, crime victimization and crime victim services, crime prevention. Conducting or assisting in specialized studies related to criminal or juvenile justice, crime victimization and crime victim services, or related areas of practice. Serving as an expert in victim services, community violence, firearms violence, and/or domestic radicalization and terrorism. Providing advice to Federal staff, practitioners, and researcher on the applications and legal implications of social and behavioral science to criminal or juvenile justice, crime victimization and crime victim services, or related areas of practice.
