This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Modified Direct Hire Auth, Section 1109; PL, 116-92, dated 12/20/2019 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is established in order to develop patterns, plan, layout, form, join, assemble, and install items which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves or planes.

Duties

Develop patterns, plan, layout, form, join, assemble, and install items which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves or planes. Operates complex hand and power machines in order to produce a variety of assembly joints, hems, and edges. Evaluate structural damage to sheet metal systems or items in order to plan and lay out repair and modification projects. Use complicated measuring instruments such as protractors, calipers, snap ring, height gauge, depth gauge, dial and screw pitch gauges, and other hand-measuring devices to measure plans and projects.

Requirements

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Incumbent will be required to utilize an automated information system comprised of hardware and software components in accomplishing the work.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Sheet Metal Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I am able to perform simple technical duties of a Sheet Metal Mechanic, or I have received training on techniques used in Sheet Metal Mechanic work (e.g., the use of basic hand and power tools for metal work). I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion makes sure that work was properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort - Physical exertion is considerable and the employee is exposed to long periods of continuous exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items and in constructing large and bulky items. Duties normally include prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, reaching, lifting, bending, and working in cramped and awkward positions. Frequent lifting is required, but seldom exceeds 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Working Conditions - Work is performed both inside and outside. Employee will be exposed to all types of weather conditions. Subject to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines and to a variety of weather conditions. Workers are subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Employee may be required to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, ear plugs, safety glasses, hard hat, respirators, gloves, and safety shoes.
