This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for certain personnel of the DoD workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) Public Works Operations and Maintenance Division.

Duties

Repair and program Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's) on industrial process control equipment. Troubleshoot Industrial process control systems, such as combustion control systems, continuous emissions monitoring systems, uninterruptable power supplies and numerous digital and analog devices. Interrogate computer-based automation systems to determine operating condition or make repairs. Interpret electrical schematics, or circuit diagrams to troubleshoot malfunctions of complex systems. Use electronic test instruments, to include Multimeters (voltage/resistance/current), Insulation Resistance Tester (Megger) Clamp Meter, and Oscilloscope, (inductive noise in signal, control or power wiring) to test and diagnose problems.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
• This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Experience includes interrogating computer-based automation systems to determine operating condition or make repairs; and troubleshooting industrial process control systems performing programing and re-programming for variable frequency drives. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate physical effort is required. Incumbent handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Extended periods of sitting and frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping are required. Position requires frequent climbing and work in high and/or confined places. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, often in inclement weather. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones and serious burns caused by electrical shock, RF energy and hot components.
