Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below for IMPORTANT additional information. The primary purpose of this position is to operate the fire alarm communication equipment and to receive and transmit verbal or coded alarms in connection with fire protection and prevention activities.

Duties

Receive incoming emergency and administrative telephone calls in a professional manner using sound judgement and take appropriate actions as required by established objectives. Perform fire alarm room communications dispatch duties, including activation of the fire station public address systems, and the fire crash radio net to transmit all pertinent information to responding firefighters. Operate a wide variety of specialized emergency communications equipment for emergency notification record keeping and vital emergency incident information. Maintain a daily log of all fire department activities using a computerized tracking system to include vehicle information, and on duty personnel status. Participate in all areas of the fire protection training program relating to the operation of the alarm center.

  • Work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license may be required for the position
  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include nights, weekends, rotating shifts, and/or holidays

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Qualification Standards for Clerical and Administrative Support Positions SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience is experience which may have been gained while assisting in operating communications equipment, receiving, sending verbal or coded alarms, and dispatching resources and equipment in connection with medical, fire, rescue, and other types of emergency information. OR EDUCATION: : Successful completion of four years of education above the high school level in any field obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. Knowledge of basic building design, construction, occupancy, and map reading. Ability to communicate orally and writing using a calm and stable demeanor while dealing with emergency situations. Ability to operate computerized and communications equipment. Ability to make sound decisions, use good judgement, and maintain good working relationships. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
