About the Position: This is a Motor Vehicle Operator (Forklift Operator) position assigned under the Directorate of Public Works within the Operations and Maintenance Division.

Duties

Operate various types of light trucks, such as pickup trucks, panel trucks, and flatbed trucks. Transport supplies, materials, and equipment safely to destination. Load and unload of vehicles by hand (with or without assistance) including arranging, securing, and protecting cargo to prevent shifting, and/or loss. Read maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Receive recyclable materials, moves items manually, and by hand, conveyer, or similar conveyance. Pick up materials and deliver to a central location. Store materials according to specific oral or written instructions and established methods. Unload items and moves them by hand, dolly, or some other manual equipment. Maintain records and assist supervisor in taking physical inventory. Maintain compliance with fire, safety, sanitation, and security requirements within the storage areas. Drive vehicles up to four tons to transport materials for various distances. Perform driver maintenance on vehicles or reports needed repairs. Operate gasoline, diesel, or electric powered vehicles with automatic or standard transmission.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid forklift operator's certification.
  • This position has a Heavy Lifting requirement, and may require lifting up to 45 lbs.
  • This position will require a pre-placement and yearly physical examination.
  • Must be able obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator (Forklift Operator)~ without more than normal supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. WG-05: Operation of vehicles up to five-ton capacity (10,000 pounds) to pick up and deliver supplies and operate fork lift equipment used to move, stack, unstack, load, and unload materials and equipment in warehouses, outside storage areas, loading docks and on and off vehicles, and complete physical inventories of property and equipment. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles)Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Related to Mobile Equipment Operation)Ability to Operate Safely (Non-motor Vehicles)Operation of Motor VehiclesWork Practices (Including Keeping Things Neat, Clean, and in Order) Physical Effort: Moderate to heavy. Work requires reaching, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls while driving, raising, lowering, and tilting fork lift trucks. Subject to possible strain caused by vibration of fork lift trucks. Occasionally may be required to make limited emergency repairs on vehicles, such as changing a flat tire. Associated duties require stooping, bending, and climbing. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier objects with assistance. Works on hard surfaces and in areas that require standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently, lifts and carries supplies or materials up to 44 pounds, occasionally, handles weights up to 70 pounds with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Working Conditions: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads (or equivalent), and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Work is done inside and outside. May work inside in areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted. May work outside in bad weather on open docks. Work may be dirty and dusty. Frequently, exposed to the possibility of incurring cuts, scrapes, bruises, falls, or injury from material handling equipment.
