Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07 level. You will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this developmental position. Responds to alarms, combats fire, and rescues personnel requiring the full performance of fire fighting tasks. Serves as hose person, ladder person, hydrant person, rescue person, nozzle person, salvage person, or hand line-person. Operates portable and stationary firefighting apparatus, ventilates buildings and aircraft, evacuates or rescues occupants. As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), performs as a member of a team responsible for on scene emergencymedical treatment and care of victims of fire, sudden illness, or accidental injury. Performs fire prevention inspections of structures, facilities, airfields and areas of the installation.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-appointment drug test prior to placement into this position and participate in random drug testing.
  • Individuals not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position must successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into the position.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Must wear a a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state and government driver's license, Emergency Vehicle Operator's certification to operate all vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
  • Must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course.
  • Required to to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations.
  • May be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends and willing to work shift work and overtime as the need arises.
  • Must maintain a functioning telephone at your residence.
  • Required to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: Positions are open to: Recent graduates who have completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. Short-term training programs (e.g. several two-week programs completed) are not considered an academic course of study. Preference eligible veterans who were precluded from applying due to their military service obligation begin their two-year eligibility period upon release or discharge from active duty. Eligibility for these veterans cannot exceed six years after degree or certificate completion Applicants can be selected at GS-03 or GS-04 grade level. The target grade of this position is GS-07. After Program completion, Department of the Army Recent Graduates MAY be converted to a permanent position. To be eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position, Recent Graduates must: Be a U.S. Citizen Successfully complete all the requirements of the Recent Graduate Program as defined in the Agency Participant Agreement. Demonstrate successful job performance. In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. General Experience for GS-3 level: Six months of general experience which included work experience or military service that demonstrated the ability to follow directions and to read, understand, and retain a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures and that otherwise demonstrates the ability to perform or learn to perform the duties of the position. OR Education/Training: One year of education above the high school level related to fire protection and/or preventionOR six months of appropriate firefighter training. OR Combination of Education/Training and Experience: A combination of education/training and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 6. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30 and/or months of firefighter training by 6. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for GS-4 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; AND (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
