These positions are located in the Maintenance and Repair Section of the Facilities Management Service at the VA New Jersey Health Care System in Lyons, NJ. The Maintenance Mechanic performs maintenance and repairs of the emergency power system, the medical gas system, automatic doors, and a wide variety of general maintenance tasks in support new construction projects, minor improvements, and renovation work to include equipment maintenance, repair, assembly, disassembly, and installation.

Duties

Performs maintenance and repair on the Emergency Power Systems which includes 13 Caterpillar and 1 Kohler emergency generators, ranging from 100KW to 2MW, 54 automatic and manual transfer switches ranging from 208 VAC to 4160 VAC, 13 Veeder-Root UST monitors, and all components; Performs maintenance and repair on the Medical Gas System which consists of a centralized Bulk Oxygen Tank, piping and regulators, isolation valves, and 220 point of use outlets; Performs routine preventive maintenance duties on the power generators, checks oil, antifreeze, block heaters, electric motors, control panels, fuel system, checks piping for leaks, fuel tanks, fuel tanks sump, fuel tanks fill sump, fuel tanks monitoring system, day tank, pumps, piping, controls, and control panels, and transfer switches; Changes belts, oil, antifreeze, hoses, fuel line, custom hoses made on location, fuel filters, fuel piping, fuel tanks monitoring system and intrinsic tests done to monitor for leaks; Checks on all medical air pumps, medical vacuum pumps, and oxygen systems; Documents all work performed by using weekly, monthly, and annual preventive maintenance work orders in the maintenance equipment record system; Repairs and maintains a wide variety of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic equipment to include adjusting automatic doors; surface mounting of handrails, fans, shelving, etc.; assembling, installing/maintaining beds, furniture, ventilation systems, AC duct systems, etc.; Maintains adequate shop stock, tools, materials, on hand to perform daily routine jobs and preventative maintenance; Oversees major repairs performed by contractors on the premises; Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized. Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not approved.

This position requires the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision, and a current and valid state-issued driver's license. Physical Effort: The person in this position is able to do the work of the position without harm to themselves or others and is aware of safety hazards and follows all established safety procedures. May be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard to reach places. May be required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, walk, reach, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 20 lbs., and less often to 90 lbs. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and other dangerous conditions. Must meet the physical requirements in order to perform proficiently the duties assigned to the position. The position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. Work Conditions: The person in this position works inside buildings of various types and also outdoors, subject to various work conditions, which may include tight and confined spaces and heights of 10 feet or more. May be required to work in all types of hazardous weather conditions, rain, sleet, snow, wind including hot and freezing temperatures. May be exposed to dust, dirt, odors, fumes, loud noise, and is required to work primarily in a medical center where may be exposed to various types of diseases and infections. May be required to perform duties in a research facility, or off his/her normal station, at remote medical clinics. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
