Duties

As a Health Physicist, the incumbent exercises responsibility for planning, advising on, and carrying out a health physics program involving radiation safety operations and issues. The major duties and responsibilities include: Demonstrates senior level expertise for health physics and radiation safety. Provides authoritative consultation and technical expertise for a comprehensive radiation safety program. Collaborates productively with scientists within and outside the immediate organization/agency. Provides technical expertise in radiation safety. Evaluates multi-discipline research operations to identify hazards associated with chemical, biological, and radiological activities and develops appropriate corrective measures. Serves as an expert on interpretation of regulatory requirements of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, other applicable federal regulations and licensing procedures. Serves as a senior expert to researchers. Represents an authoritative source of consultation for scientists and program specialists. Provides comprehensive radiation safety oversight to a complex health physics and/or programmatic area. May provide expertise in internal dosimetry, decommissioning, facility design, BSL-4 laboratories, cyclotrons, etc. Keeps abreast of new developments and experimental theories to solve novel or obscure problems, modify existing techniques, and develop new approaches. Provides radiation safety support for therapeutic administrations of radioactive materials; participates in emergency response activities; reviews qualifications of researchers to use radioactive materials and proposed protocols for use of large amounts of radioactivity in laboratories or animal studies; performs radiation safety and quality control checks of laboratory equipment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Health Physicist, GS-1306-12/13 position, you must meet the following Basic Education Requirements: Have a Bachelor's or higher degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR Have a combination of directly related education and experience - courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above. In addition to the Basic Education Requirement above, in order to qualify for a Health Physicist position at the GS-1306-12 level you must meet the following: Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning, advising on, and carrying out a health physics program involving radiation safety operations and issues; providing technical expertise in radiation safety and sealed sources; and interpreting NRC and other applicable federal regulations and licensing procedures. In addition to the Basic Education Requirement above, in order to qualify for a Health Physicist position at the GS-1306-13 level you must meet the following requirement: Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning, advising on, and carrying out a health physics program involving radiation safety operations and issues; develop methods and procedures to resolve complex radiation safety matters within established regulations, policies, and procedures; demonstrating leadership in complex health physics scenarios, and interpreting NRC and other applicable federal regulations and licensing procedures.
