About the Position: Performs technical work of a medical nature subordinate to doctors in the Ophthalmology Service, which provides inpatient/outpatient medical care services to all eligible beneficiaries. Functions of the Ophthalmology Service include examination, diagnosis, triage and treatment of injuries and disorders of the eye by surgical and medical means.

Duties

Coordinates with the operating room and/or Ambulatory Diagnostic Treatment Center (ADTC) personnel for the appropriate setup of lighting, equipment, instruments, window coverings, and all other preliminaries for surgery. Completes all incident report forms regarding these failures and submits them to the surgeon for review and endorsement. Serves as first surgical assistant and as scrub assistant to the surgeon in major and minor surgical procedures. Ensures completion of all incident report forms and ensures review/endorsement by the surgeon.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Childcare National Agency Check with Inquiries Background Investigation (CNACI). This position requires you to be able to successfully complete the rigor of a Childcare Background Investigation.
  • This position has a mandatory Seasonal Influenza Vaccination and is therefore, subject to annual Seasonal Influenza Vaccination.
  • This position requires a current Basic Life Support (BLS)certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association. Advanced certification does not supersede BLS certification.
  • Special immunizations are required. This position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 96006, 23October 1996, which requires the employees to obtain Hepatitis B Immunization unless exempted by a physician.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Ophthalmology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Health Care Data Entry and ManagementTechnical CompetenceTechnology and Informatics Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
