Job opening: Special Assistant United States Attorney

Salary: $115 000 per year

The U.S. Attorney's Office is responsible for the prosecution of federal crimes in the Eastern District of Missouri, including crimes relating to terrorism, fraud, public corruption, firearms, narcotics, child exploitation and human trafficking. The office also defends the United States in civil cases and collects debts owed to the United States. Duties

The Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) sponsors an initiative designed to enhance the resources of the United States Attorney's Offices to ensue additional methamphetamine and other emerging drug cases are aggressively prosecuted at the federal level by contracting for services of SAUSAs. These SAUSAs, specializing in methamphetamine cases, are expected to follow trends in distribution and manufacture of methamphetamine, including the acquisition and use of precursor chemicals, which will result in more efficient investigations and prosecutions. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Type of Position: This is a temporary position not-to-exceed 1 year. This position may be extended without further competition. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. Attorneys are not eligible to serve as Special Assistant United States Attorneys if they have had an employment offer deferred by a law firm and received a payment for the period of their deferral with the expectation of future employment with the law firm, or if they will receive any payment from a law firm during their unpaid employment with the Department of Justice. In addition, contractors, including employees of contractors who do business with the Department of Justice, and who also are attorneys, are not eligible to serve as Special Assistant United States Attorneys.

Requirements

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must also possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction); and have at least one (1) year post J.D. legal or relevant experience. Applicant must possess superior oral and written communication skills, as well as strong character and interpersonal skills; have demonstrated the capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. Preferred Qualification: Outstanding academic record; substantial jury trial experience.; exceptional research and writing ability; the ability to successfully represent the interest of the United States in the federal court; the ability to handle and successfully manage a heavy case load involving complex cases; five or more jury trials. United States citizenship is required. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
