Duties

Major Duties Statement This position is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Maintenance Division, Plateau District, Rocky Knob Sub-district. Employee performs a variety of park maintenance and repair duties on buildings, structures, facilities, roads, and grounds. Makes repairs to buildings and structures. Prepares surfaces for painting by sanding; paints ceilings walls and doors. Repairs and replaces standard plumbing fittings, clears simple stoppages, replaces washers in faucets. Replaces fuses, light bulbs. Removes trash and debris from roadway and road sites; operates heavy riding and walking-type lawn mowers, cuts trees with chainsaw. Cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Makes minor repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers. Area/Duty Station Information The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles along the crest of the southern Appalachian Mountains through North Carolina and Virginia between two eastern national parks - Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. The county seat, The Town of Floyd, is 41 miles - about an hour's drive- southwest of Roanoke on U.S. 221. Floyd is one hour west of Martinsville, and 90 minutes north of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mabry Mill, located in Floyd County, is one of the most visited and photographed sites along the 469-mile length of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Rocky Knob recreation area along the Parkway also features hiking, camping and panoramic views.
