About the Position: Serves as working leader over three or four firefighter (driver/operators, EMT Basic Life Support (BLS), and/or Hazmat) positions assigned grades GS-06 and 07 and ensures that required work is performed. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Duties

As Crew Chief, is responsible for directing and participating in the work of the crew of one piece of motorized fire fighting equipment. When assigned to station #1, is responsible for scheduled building inspections and for responding to standbys and emergencies in the area served. When assigned to station #2, is responsible for scheduled building inspections, fire alarm, extinguish systems and fire hose inspection and maintenance, and for responding to standby and emergency calls in the serviced area. When assigned to station #3, is part of a 7 employee, 2 or 3 crew shift and assists employee in charge of the airfield station with planning, training, work direction, reporting accomplishment of scheduled work / activities conducted at the station. Provide non-professional emergency medical care as an ambulance driver and emergency medical technician (EMT), Basic Life Support, requiring EMT certification.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator's license of the appropriate type and classification.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoDI 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Must participate in the fire department?s Fitness and Wellness Program, IAW NFPA 1583 Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Fighters and DoDI 6055.06, Fitness and Wellness.
  • Hours for this position may vary between 53-72 hours per week (106-144 per pay period, and is subject to rotating assignments between all installation fire stations.
  • Subject to recall.
  • The position requires heavy physical effort in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers, fire hose and both non-powered and powered tools weighing 45 lbs or more.
  • Must be able to fully wear and perform duties wearing self-contained breathing apparatus and other respiratory systems that may restrict breathing.
  • Required to wear a uniform and may be required to use heavy, cumbersome, restrictive personal protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, shields, body armor, encapsulating suits, etc.
  • In accordance with Change 3 of AR 600-85, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program, must successfully pass a urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • TDY travel may be required up to 15%.
  • Within the first year of occupying the position, must obtain and then continue to maintain National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Firefighter Type II Red Card Certification.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security clearance.
