About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Installs, diagnoses and repairs large systems which perform heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating functions, i.e., clinics, hangars, warehouses, communication centers, etc. Maintains the flow control valves and the associated temperature control requirement for the high temperature water (HTW) heating system. Utilizes meters and gauges in order to make appropriate adjustments to fuel and air flow. Checks for the probability of leaks by visible and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed procedures and exploring probably reasons for equipment failure. Installs, diagnoses, overhauls, and repairs electronic control systems by running wire, mounting thermostats, receiver boards, and cutting resisters in board to code customized needs. Repairs or replaces switches, motors, fuses, fans, belts, and wiring.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 80 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work alone on a rotating basis on evening/weekend duty.
  • This position is an Inclement Weather Essential position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a valid Government driver's license.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear Personal Protective Equipment that is provided.
  • Up to 5% Travel for Duty.

Selective Placement Factor: This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain, for the duration of employment in this position, a valid Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certification for refrigerant use. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen OutAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments The incumbent handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices that weigh 80 pounds or less. The work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. However, occasional platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach parts of the systems such as fans, electrical and waterlines, and duct work. The incumbent is required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Most of the work is done indoors, but the incumbent is frequently subject to uncomfortable temperature changes, dusty and dirty conditions, and small confined places while working on equipment. There is also occasional work performed outside and on the tops of buildings. The incumbent is subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. Exposure to repented refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs. Use of safety equipment such as safety shoes, protective breathing apparatus, hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, and hats is required.
