About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency (DHA). It's located at the Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital located on Fort Johnson, Louisiana. The primary purpose is to provide protective services for personnel and prevent the damage or loss of property within hospitals. Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

Duties

Perform access control at gates, parking and traffic control. Monitor personnel access via personal sight and electronic access. Conduct both internal and external patrols of the hospital, parking lots/garages, and grounds. Act as a first responder for all emergency situations. Maintain an activities journal to document shift activity. Actively observe, detect, stop, detain and question possible suspicious individuals in the vicinity of assigned patrol.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements. Incumbent will be required to regularly work 12-hour shifts.
  • This position requires the incumbent to qualify annually with a 9mm Semi-Automatic pistol and be proficient in any other required firearms, scanner metal detector and oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray/foam.
  • The incumbent is required to maintain a high standard of conduct; and will be assessed under the Individual Reliability Program to show they can work effectively under pressure or emergency conditions with a positive attitude toward his/her duties.
  • This position requires incumbent to complete a pre-employment physical, physical agility, and psychological examinations and annual thereafter to ensure the required level of physical health and ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires incumbent to be trained and maintain current required certifications in CPR techniques and must know first aid.
  • This position requires incumbent to wear a chemical protective mask and a uniform.
  • This position has the following medical requirements; good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
  • This position is under the Federal Motor Operations medical requirement specified in 5 Code of Federal Regulations Section 930 Part 109; persons operating a Government owned or leased vehicle are subject to medical testing once every 4 years.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg amendment to the gun control act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition.
  • This position requires the incumbent not have any criminal convictions and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Criminal convictions and/or loss of license may result in removal from the position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing armed guard services to preserve peace and order, utilizing law enforcement equipment such as: restraining devices (handcuffs), safety equipment (L.C., fire extinguishers), two way communication devices, and motor vehicles to restrain individuals, communicate with emergency personnel, and patrol around the facility, applying security policies and procedures related to anti-terrorism, physical security, legal authority and jurisdiction, sabotage and espionage, and emergencies in protecting federal property; writing reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
